Politico: Trump is ready to make concessions but Iran refuses to give him what he needs to save face
Politico, citing a senior Gulf official, reported that US President Donald Trump may offer new concessions on Iran because he wants to end the conflict.
Politico quoted the source as saying: “I think Trump will make new concessions… Trump is serious about the negotiations and really wants to end this, but the Iranians are so far refusing to give him what he needs to save face and get out of the conflict”.
Indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan in Islamabad, are continuing, but the first round concluded without a comprehensive agreement, with Washington asserting that it had made its final offer and leaving the decision to Iran to accept or reject.
Iran has so far refused to discuss the transfer of enriched nuclear materials, and insists on recognition of its right to enrich uranium as part of any future settlement, while the two sides are considering extending the ceasefire and entering into more detailed technical negotiations on issues of the nuclear program, missiles, and the safety of navigation in the Gulf and territorial waters.
The US president had announced that Iran had agreed to hand over its stockpile of enriched uranium.
He asserted that the chances of reaching a settlement were now very high and that the two sides were nearing a final agreement.
However, the Iranian news agency Mizan quoted a well-informed source denying Trump’s claim that any agreement had been reached regarding the transfer of nuclear materials to the United States.
