Politico: NATO divided over Ukraine’s membership
The member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are divided over Ukraine’s membership in the alliance.
The Politico newspaper reported that NATO was divided over the possibility of Ukraine’s entry into the alliance, and representatives of some countries are trying not to even touch on this issue, including not wanting to anger Russia.
Politico said: “NATO is divided over how and when Ukraine should join the alliance, and major capitals do not want to provoke the Kremlin more, and most importantly, NATO’s legal membership is based on providing assistance to Ukraine in the event of an attack, a possibility that many won’t consider”.
For many officials, the topic of Ukraine’s accession to NATO has become taboo.
They prefer not to touch it, and if they have to say something, they give short answers.
“This is such a sensitive issue that many NATO allies try not to even talk about it as a result, even though Europe and the United States have overcome taboos one by one, transporting mountains of lethal military equipment to Kiev”.
The Politico considered that the sanctions against Moscow and the abandonment of Russian energy resources and the possibility of Ukraine’s accession to NATO remains a painful topic for international politics.
