Poland concludes deal with US to buy long-range missiles
Warsaw said on Monday it plans to buy 677 million Euros worth of long-range missiles from the United States to bolster its defense capabilities against potential Russian threats.
The deal, which is due to be officially signed on Tuesday, is part of the Polish military’s rapid modernization process against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine has shown the importance of having the ability to fire missiles at targets even if they are far from the front line, and the range of the missiles to be purchased is about 1,000 kilometers,” the Polish Defense Ministry said.
The Polish Defense Ministry added that it would receive JASSM missiles, known as joint ground-based air confrontation missiles between 2026 and 2030.
Poland’s arsenal currently includes this type of missile, which has a range of 370 kilometers and is used by its F16 aircraft.
Warsaw has boosted its defense budget to about four percent of gross domestic product, the highest among NATO countries.
It has also launched a series of purchases of military equipment worth billions of dollars, mostly from the United States and South Korea.
