The New York Times, citing US officials, announced that the Pentagon will withdraw dozens of its special forces present in Chad during the next few days.

The New York Times considered that the decision to withdraw about 75 members of the US special forces from Chad is a second major blow within a week to US security and the policy of combating terrorism in the turbulent region of West and Central Africa.

The New York Times pointed out that Washington was forced to withdraw its forces in response to the demands of the two African governments to renegotiate the rules and conditions under which US military personnel can work there.

US officials say they hope to resume talks between Washington and N’Djamena regarding security cooperation, after the presidential elections that will be held in the country on May 6.

Earlier this month, the Chadian authorities threatened to end the security agreement linking the country with the United States, and called, in a letter addressed to its US military attaché, for the departure of a special operations team operating from a military base in the capital, N’Djamena, and being used as a coordination center; US military training and advice to missions in the region.

The expected withdrawal of US forces from Chad comes at a time when US forces are also preparing to withdraw from Niger, in light of the increasing Russian military presence in the region.
