Netanyahu: Overthrowing Assad in Syria wasn’t in Israel’s interest
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the overthrow of former regime leader Bashar al Assad on December 8 wasn’t in Israel’s interest.
In his speech during the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday, Sunday, Netanyahu said, “We didn’t welcome the fall of the Bashar al Assad regime, but that doesn’t matter… We’ll not allow Syrian territory to be used to launch attacks on us”.
Netanyahu said that Israel was able to stop Iran’s attempts to support the Assad regime, considering that the fall of Assad changed the political map of the Middle East.
He added, “We’re committed to ensuring that Syria doesn’t again pose a threat to Israel’s security”.
It’s noteworthy that Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967, and after the fall of Assad, it took control of large areas of the buffer zone between Syria and Israel, and carried out air strikes targeting military sites and ammunition belonging to the Syrian army.
