Moscow announces the main files of the fifth tripartite summit on Syria

The Kremlin announced the main themes of the fifth tripartite summit on Syria, which will bring together Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterparts Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian Hassan Rouhani, in Ankara.

Yuri Ushakov, assistant to the Russian president, told reporters on Friday that “the three leaders of the guarantors of the Astana process for the Syrian settlement, will discuss in the framework of the summit scheduled for next Monday 16 September in the Turkish capital Ankara, in detail, the situation in Idlib and northeastern Syria”.

The situation in these areas, which are not under the control of the Syrian central government, “remains tense and there is a large presence of terrorists”.

Putin, Erdogan and Rouhani will also discuss issues related to moving the political process forward with the efforts of the Syrians themselves and with UN assistance in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, Ushakov said.

“The completion of the process of forming the Constitutional Committee and launching its work in line with the decisions of the Syrian Dialogue Conference held in January 2018 in Sochi will become an important stage in the efforts to activate the political process.

We consider the formation of the Constitutional Committee a unique opportunity to launch a direct dialogue between the Syrians, will be the first on the future of their country.

Other topics for the summit are the humanitarian situation in Syria, refugee assistance, infrastructure reconstruction and mine clearance.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Russian president will hold bilateral meetings with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts.

In the context of the Iranian nuclear issue, Ushakov called on Tehran to refrain from “taking steps that may undermine the efforts of the concerned countries aimed at saving this deal”.

– Strengthening economic and trade cooperation, including the project to build the Bushehr nuclear power plant, measures to expand direct transactions between Russia and Iran using the two national currencies, and the interaction between the Russian financial correspondence banking system and its Iranian counterpart Sibam as an alternative to the SWIFT global system.

– Military-technical cooperation, including possible new contracts for the supply of Russian weapons to Turkey.

– Ways to increase trade between Russia and Turkey, including through the expansion of direct transactions in national currencies.

– Implementation of strategic energy projects, such as the construction of the Akoyo nuclear power plant and the Turkish Torrent gas project.
