The Turkish Milliyet newspaper said that stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe will help make Türkiye an energy hub, which will allow Ankara to obtain a large share in the energy trade.

Milliyet also pointed out that there is an idea to establish a stock exchange in Türkiye where energy prices would be determined.

“Thus, Türkiye will become one of the countries in the world where energy prices are determined… Is there such an example? There are also Germany and the Netherlands… They aren’t energy producing countries, but they set prices… Türkiye will become such a country… This means that we will have a say in the energy market,” Milliyet said.

Gazprom said on Wednesday that it had been stripped of the technical and legal capacity to supply gas for transit through Ukraine, due to the expiration of the agreement with the Ukrainian company Naftogaz on January 1. Kiev has repeatedly said in the past that it has no plans to extend the transit agreement.

Russian First Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin said in late November that Moscow and Ankara were continuing to work on creating a gas hub that would be beneficial to both sides.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on November 1 that Ankara expected to launch an international gas hub in 2025.
