Maariv: Legal authorization allows investigation of Netanyahu in the case of leaking information and security documents from his office

The Israeli government’s legal advisor, Gali Baharav-Miara, gave the relevant authorities the authority to investigate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the case of leaking security information and documents from his office to foreign media.

The Maariv newspaper said that Mayara gave the green light to the relevant authorities to investigate the issue of information and documents leaked from Netanyahu’s office, which was raised about a week ago, which allows for an investigation into Netanyahu himself.

Against the backdrop of these leaks, which included dangerous and sensitive security documents related to the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, some of which were simply lies, the Israeli General Security Service (Shabak) announced last Sunday the arrest of 4 people, including one of Netanyahu’s office spokespersons, named Eli Feldstein.

Regarding the reason for issuing a mandate from Mayara, despite the fact that the investigation has already begun, judicial sources told Maariv newspaper that the approval of the legal advisor means that the investigations may include the prime minister.

The sources explained that Article 17 of the Basic Law: The Government, stipulates the necessity of obtaining the approval of the Government’s Legal Advisor to investigate any case involving the Prime Minister.

According to this legal clause, if the prime minister is proven to be involved in one of the cases, investigators must temporarily halt the investigation until they obtain the legal advisor’s approval again to resume legal proceedings against him.

On Thursday, several Israeli media outlets, including the official broadcasting authority, reported that senior officials in Netanyahu’s office are being investigated for possible involvement in the leaks case.

Channel 12 explained that the scandal also includes suspicions of documenting a military figure via surveillance cameras and leaking these documents.

This comes at a time when Netanyahu’s government is facing a series of political and security crises, including the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Galant, which was met with strong opposition, in addition to the escalation of the ongoing war of extermination in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
