A team of Turkish police investigators and prosecutors on Tuesday left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul after an unprecedented eight-hour investigation and agreed with the Saudi authorities after the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Turkish team members who conducted the investigation, accompanied by a Saudi delegation during the inspection, returned to their cars and left the scene, an AFP correspondent said.

An official said they took samples, especially from the soil of the consulate park.

On Monday, Turkish police searched the headquarters of the Saudi consulate, the last place Khashoggi was seen on October 2, before he disappeared.

The officers, some in uniform and others in civilian uniform, arrived at the consulate in six cars and entered the building immediately.

The teams were still inside the consulate three hours after the inspection began and one expert climbed to the roof of the building.

The inspection came at a time when CNN reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia was planning to say Khashoggi was mistakenly killed during questioning inside the consulate in Istanbul.

The Turkish Anatolia news agency reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Turkey on Wednesday to meet his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

Saudi Arabia is preparing a report recognizing the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi as a result of a wrong investigation, CNN reported on Monday, quoting unnamed sources.

One source warned that the report was still under preparation and could change.

The source quoted the other source as saying that the report is likely to conclude that this operation was conducted without permission and that those involved in it will be held accountable.
