Izvestia: The Syrian army may receive US weapons for the first time

Russian Izvestia newspaper, spoke about Washington’s motive for giving the green light to the Kurds’ agreement with Damascus.
For the first time, Syria may receive American weapons from the arsenal of Kurdish groups.
This became possible following the signing of an agreement on March 10 between Damascus and the leadership of the Kurdish Syria Democratic Forces (SDF).
A Kurdish source told the Russian newspaper that the agreement was prepared in February 2025 after a series of meetings with the participation of US military personnel.
According to media reports, the agreement was made possible thanks to signals from Washington that it intends to withdraw its forces from Syria, which would leave the Kurds vulnerable to threats from Türkiye.
Consequently, the Syrian army will be significantly strengthened economically and militarily.
The Syria Democratic Forces are large and well-equipped, possessing modern weapons and heavy armament.
According to various estimates, their numbers may reach 100,000 fighters.
At the same time, problems may arise in the process of integrating Kurdish forces into the structure of the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
This is primarily a personnel issue… It concerns the distribution of positions, the delegation of tasks and objectives, and the interaction between the various military bodies.
The issue of the safety of the weapons possessed by the Kurdish formations must also be resolved.
The problem here may lie in Türkiye’s position, which is unlikely to agree to storing these weapons on Syrian territory, which is located close to its border.
This will be a crucial issue in the implementation of the agreement and future relations between the Kurds and the Syrian government.
Moreover, it cannot be confirmed that all factions within the Syria Democratic Forces have agreed to integrate into the Syrian army.
Some groups may reject the offer and remain independent entities, which would also require further settlement.
