Italian Defense Minister: Israel has lost its senses and humanity
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said in an interview published Monday that the Israeli government had “lost its sense and humanity” regarding Gaza and indicated his openness to the possibility of imposing sanctions on Israel.
“What is happening is unacceptable,” Crosetto told Italian La Stampa newspaper.
“We’re not facing a military operation that causes unintended damage, but rather a complete denial of the law and the founding values of our civilization”.
“We’re committed to humanitarian aid, but we now have to find a way to force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to think clearly, beyond mere condemnation,” he added.
Asked about the possibility of international sanctions against Israel, Corsetto said, “The occupation of Gaza and some of the dangerous actions in the West Bank constitute a major shift that requires decisions to confront them, forcing Netanyahu to reflect”.
He continued, “It’ll not be a step against Israel, but rather a way to protect the people from a government that has lost its sense of reason and humanity”.
His remarks came after Netanyahu defended his plan to seize control of Gaza City and target remaining Hamas strongholds, which drew international criticism.
Italy refused to join the ranks of other countries that have announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.
Crosetto defended his country’s position by saying, “Recognizing a state that doesn’t exist risks becoming a mere political provocation in a world that is being killed by provocations”.
