Israeli Media: Talks between Israel and Syria on security agreement making significant progress
The Israeli channel i24, citing a Syrian source close to President Ahmed al Sharaa, revealed that the ongoing talks between Syria and Israel on a security agreement have witnessed remarkable progress in recent weeks, with strong odds that it could be signed soon.
According to the source, this breakthrough is due to the intensive efforts made by US President Donald Trump to push the process forward.
The agreement, which includes a diplomatic annex, is expected to be signed during a high-level meeting between Syrian and Israeli delegations in a European country in the coming period.
The Syrian source also didn’t rule out the possibility of a direct meeting between President Ahmed al Sharaa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to officially sign the agreement.
In previous statements, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani confirmed that Damascus expects to reach a security agreement with Israel based on the 1974 armistice agreement, with minor amendments to it and without the establishment of buffer zones, before the end of this year.
For its part, Israel rejected Syria’s demand for a full withdrawal from all points controlled by the Israeli army inside Syrian territory after the fall of the Assad’s regime.
Israeli sources suggest that the army may withdraw from some of the nine points it currently controls, but that would be conditional on a comprehensive peace agreement with Syria, not just a limited security agreement.
