Israeli media revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to inform the US administration in the next few days of the identity of the new envoy who will manage the negotiations with Syria, succeeding the resigned Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.

According to Israeli Channel 12 quoting US officials, Netanyahu told US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack during a meeting on Monday that he was in the process of appointing a new figure to lead this path after the resignation of Dermer, who until recently led the negotiations.

Dermer announced his resignation on November 11 after conducting four rounds of negotiations related to a possible security agreement between Israel and Syria, before the talks stalled after he left office.

During the same meeting, Barrack expressed Washington’s desire to resume security negotiations between the two sides, asking who would lead the file from the Israeli side.

Initially, some US officials thought that Dermer would continue to manage the issue as Netanyahu’s special envoy from outside the government, but senior US sources confirmed that Netanyahu had settled the matter and that he would appoint a replacement and inform US President Donald Trump’s administration of this soon.

The nature of the negotiations related to a new security agreement on the Syrian-Israeli border has prompted Netanyahu to consider choosing a figure with a security background, possibly currently holding a position in Israel’s security establishment.
