Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called for Syria to be transformed into a federal state with multiple autonomous regions.

He made the call during a meeting of the EU-Israel Association Council in Brussels, which was attended by representatives of the European Union.

Sa’ar said that Israel has proven over the past 16 months that its a pillar of strength and stability in the Middle East, pointing to its support for military operations in Gaza and airstrikes in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.

He added that Israel is working to promote stability in the region despite the challenges posed by the Palestinian conflict.

Sa’ar also stressed that a stable Syria can only be a federal Syria that includes autonomous regions, calling for respect for the different ways of life in Syrian regions.

In another context, Israeli official met with Syrian Druze leaders, aiming strengthening relations between the two sides.

According to the Israel Today newspaper, Major General Ghassan Alian (Druz), the Israeli government’s coordinator in the West Bank, recently met with Syrian Druze leaders in a move aimed at strengthening relations.

This meeting comes at a sensitive time after statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he stressed zero tolerance for any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria.

The meeting included discussing an Israeli proposal to grant residents of Druze villages in southern Syria work permits that would allow them to enter Israel to work daily.

However, the Israeli newspaper noted that many villages in southern Syria have rejected humanitarian aid provided by the Israeli army, raising questions about the extent to which the local community accepts these initiatives.

On the Syrian side, according to local sources, who revealed details of a meeting between Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa and a delegation from Sweida Governorate, where security and living conditions and the future of Syria were discussed.

Engineer Karam Munther explained that the meeting touched on the Israeli statements about southern Syria, where it was emphasized that the people of Sweida adhere to the unity of Syrian lands and reject any foreign interference.

The attendees also reiterated their rejection of any form of sectarian quotas, stressing the need to build a democratic state that respects competencies.

In his recent statements, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu focused on protecting the Druze sect in southern Syria, which reflects Israel’s traditional policy in this regard.

Observers believe that Israel is exploiting this issue to justify its military incursion into southern Syria.

In contrast, the Druze-majority province of Sweida faces internal challenges, as it refuses to engage in the new political and military project of the Syrian state, which opens the door to external interventions.

The Sweida issue is of strategic importance to Jordan, given its geographical location close to the Jordanian border, as any change in

the political or military situation in the province could have direct repercussions on Jordan’s security and stability.
