Greece rejects Türkiye’s plans to conclude a maritime agreement with Syria
The Greek government has announced its rejection of Turkish plans to conclude a maritime agreement with Syria, considering the Syrian government a transitional authority and not authorized to conclude agreements.
The Greek response, came after statements made by the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, who explained that the intended agreement is part of a broader strategy that includes projects in the fields of air transport, railways and communications.
From there parts, Greek diplomatic sources as saying that the situation in Syria is a transitional situation that does not legitimize such agreements, adding, “we are closely monitoring developments and are in constant contact with Cyprus, neighboring countries and the European Union”.
Greece continues to pressure the European Union to stop Türkiye’s efforts, with a Greek official revealing that his country’s priority is to prevent Türkiye from creating a veneer of legitimacy for this agreement.
It’s worth mentioning that, this move is very similar to the maritime agreement which Türkiye signed with Libya in 2019, where Greece and the European Union condemned as illegal.
