German Foreign Minister promises to support Moldova’s efforts to join the EU
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock promised to provide more support to the republic of Moldova, that is located on the border with Ukraine, in its efforts to join the European Union.
During a meeting with her counterpart from Moldova, Mihai Bobosoi, Baerbock said in Berlin on Tuesday that “Moldova’s accession to the European Union is a geopolitical necessity and a result of the aggressive war waged by Russia against Ukraine”.
In turn, the Moldovan Foreign Minister stressed, that his country is making progress in reforms and the fight against corruption, and said, “All of our citizens consider themselves citizens of the European Union, despite the fact that the Kremlin is using all the tools of hybrid warfare to drive a wedge between us, including Citizens of Moldova who speak Romanian or Russian”.
From her part, Baerbock stressed that Moldova, which is threatened by Russia in a hybrid way, for example, through disinformation, has begun important reforms in an environment that is more than difficult for a candidate to join the European Union.
“What is important now is to maintain this momentum and move forward on this path of reform, especially in Justice sector,” she said.
Referring to the upcoming elections in Moldova and the planned referendum on joining the European Union, Baerbock said, “We know for sure that Russia will do everything in its power in this regard to divide you and spread its propaganda”.
Baerbock pointed out that democratic systems are frequently exposed to danger because of the great freedom they enjoy, especially during periods of electoral campaigns, “but democratic systems do not lack in defending themselves”.
The Moldova Counter-Disinformation Center, in cooperation with the European Union, is working to expand the capacity to analyze and react to fake news and false narratives coming from Russia.
