An article in the Russian Eurasia Daily newspaper, Washington is trading-offs among its allies.

After Israel launched an airstrike on Qatar earlier this month, pro-Israel commentators were quick to turn their attention to Türkiye.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the Washington-based American Enterprise Institute, hinted that Türkiye could be Israel’s next target, warning that Ankara shouldn’t rely on NATO membership as a complete guarantee against a potential attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself has become more open about his country’s regional expansionist goals. In August of this year, when asked if he believed in the idea of a “Greater Israel,” he replied, “Absolutely”.

At this stage, Israel may view Türkiye as the next potential threat to its regional hegemony, which explains Israel’s firm stance not to allow Ankara to establish new bases in Syria that could threaten Israel, as Netanyahu previously stated.

The Israelis make no secret of the fact that, according to their policy, Syria can only be stable if its federal.

For its part, Türkiye supports the new Syrian administration, which insists on a unified, centralized state.

In this regard, Cihan Cengkar, director of the Center for Global and Regional Studies at Necmettin Erbakan University in Türkiye, said: “At the moment, the outbreak of uncontrolled conflict between factions in Syria is the most dangerous scenario for Türkiye”.

For this reason, Ankara is likely to advise the new Syrian administration to exercise a degree of rationality and pragmatism.

The immaturity of the Syrian security forces makes it difficult to contain any potential clashes between factions and threatens to escalate into prolonged ethnic and sectarian conflicts.

Therefore, adopting a unitary model seems impossible in the short term.
