EU foreign policy commissioner: The United States wants to divide the EU!
In striking remarks reflecting rising tensions in transatlantic relations, EU foreign policy commissioner Kaja Kallas accused the United States of seeking to divide the European continent, stressing that Washington doesn’t like the European Union.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Kallas said: “I think it’s very important for everyone to understand that the United States has made clear its desire to divide Europe… They don’t like the European Union”.
She added that the US administration is using tactics similar to those used by the EU’s traditional adversaries.
Kallas’s remarks come on the heels of the White House’s publication in December 2025 of a new US national security strategy, which explicitly calls on Europe to take responsibility for its own self-defense.
The document also states that Washington doesn’t agree with European officials who have unrealistic expectations about the conflict in Ukraine.
In a related context, US President Donald Trump has previously strongly attacked European countries, describing them as a group of countries led by weak people, criticizing their failures to deal with the immigration issue.
Trump expressed concern about the bad trends in Europe, warning that some European countries won’t remain viable countries if they don’t change their internal conditions.
These reciprocal statements reflect a new chapter of coldness and discord between the two historic allies, at a time when Europe faces increasing security and economic challenges on its eastern and southern borders.
