Egypt announced its intention to officially enter to support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court to review Israel’s violations of its obligations under the Genocide Convention, especially in the Gaza Strip.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that the decision to enter into the lawsuit came as a result of the escalation of Israeli attacks in Gaza, directing direct attacks on civilians and destroying infrastructure, which led to a stifling humanitarian crisis.

The statement pointed out that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.

In this context, Egypt called on Israel to comply with its obligations as an occupying Power, to implement the necessary measures to ensure that humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza is accessible and that no violations are committed against the Palestinian people.

The statement called on the Security Council and international actors to take immediate action to stop military operations in Gaza and provide protection for civilians.

In a related context, Cairo refused to coordinate with Israel in the entry of aid through the Rafah crossing due to the unacceptable Israeli escalation.

Israeli forces also moved in and took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing and entered some eastern neighborhoods of Rafah.

Cairo affirmed its readiness to deal with all scenarios, while stressing the continuation of efforts to achieve a truce through the negotiating track, with the participation of Hamas, Israel, Qatar and the United States.
