During the Syrian president visit to Baku… Syria announces signing an agreement with Azerbaijan’s SOCAR to supply natural gas
Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al Bashir announced on Saturday the signing of an official agreement with Azerbaijan’s state energy company, SOCAR, to supply natural gas to Syria.
This move aims to support the country’s energy sector and enhance supply security.
In a post on X, the Syrian Energy Minister explained that he accompanied Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa during his official visit to the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, where they discussed prospects for cooperation in the natural gas sector, which would serve Syria’s energy future.
He said, “We signed an agreement with SOCAR to supply natural gas, which is an important step toward achieving energy independence in Syria and building strategic partnerships that serve the interests of Syrian citizens”.
This step comes as part of Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa’s first-ever visit to Azerbaijan, where he met with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, at the Zogulba Palace, in the presence of official delegations from both countries.
The visit came after Baku announced its intention to support the new Syrian government by supplying it with natural gas, as part of growing bilateral cooperation.
Azerbaijan affirms its readiness to participate in the reconstruction of Syria.
A high-level government delegation from Azerbaijan visited Damascus last May, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov, where they held talks with the Syrian president and a number of ministers.
The talks focused on ways to strengthen economic relations between the two countries, particularly in the areas of energy, infrastructure, industry, and health.
The Azerbaijani delegation affirmed its country’s readiness to actively participate in the reconstruction process in Syria, leveraging its extensive experience in the oil and gas sectors, and committed to commencing joint projects without delay.
Tripartite cooperation between Syria, Türkiye, and Azerbaijan is under consideration.
The discussions also addressed proposals to expand regional cooperation through a tripartite mechanism comprising Syria, Türkiye, and Azerbaijan, as well as developing a plan to facilitate the exchange of trade and official delegations, thus strengthening political and economic relations in the coming period.
