Der Spiegel: Russia prepares to evacuate its military bases in Syria after the fall of the Syrian regime
The German Der Spiegel magazine said, based on an internal military analysis issued by the German Ministry of Defense, that Russia is making all necessary preparations to evacuate its military bases in Syria.
According to the memo, the Russian naval fleet has already left the Syrian port of Tartus, in a move interpreted as a reordering of Russian priorities in the region after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime and his escape to Russia.
This development indicates a major strategic shift in Russian policy towards Syria, as Moscow is likely to reduce its military presence after losing its main ally in the region.
So far, no official statements have been issued by the Russian side regarding these moves, leaving the door open to speculation about the future of the Russian role in Syria after the fall of the regime.
On the other, hand still no official Russian comments on these reports, as the Russian foreign ministry said that it has opened a line of connection with current leadership in Syria in order to maintain the Russian base operational.
