Der Spiegel: Germany releases the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets deals to Türkiye
The German government has officially approved a deal to export 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Türkiye, according to the German Der Spiegel magazine.
The decision, which came after approval by the German Federal Security Council, represents a pivotal shift in years of negotiations that had repeatedly faltered due to previous objections from Berlin.
Ankara, an active member of NATO, has been seeking to complete this deal since 2022 as part of a strategic plan to modernize its air fleet, amid repeated delays in other arms programs.
These aircraft are expected to significantly enhance Turkey’s defense capabilities, especially amid escalating regional tensions.
The aircraft are produced by a European consortium comprising major defense companies such as Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, with any export deal requiring collective approval from the four manufacturing countries: Germany, the UK, Italy, and Spain.
Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed hope for accelerating the agreement, noting that both Germany and Britain had shown a “positive attitude” toward Türkiye’s request.
The deal could be worth up to $5.6 billion, making it one of Türkiye’s largest defense deals in recent years.
