Der Spiegel: Attractive salaries to attract male and female recruits to the German army
Der Spiegel magazine revealed on Monday that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius plans to classify future military service members as temporary soldiers, which would allow them to receive better salaries.
According to a draft of the new military service law reviewed by the magazine, the salary under the federal salary law will be significantly higher than the current salaries received by those performing voluntary military service.
The net salary in the new service is expected to exceed 2,000 Euros per month, as for the duration of basic military service, the draft only states that it will be “determined uniformly,” but according to what is being circulated, it will initially be a minimum of six months.
The German magazine stated that the law gives the federal government the power to “call up citizens for compulsory military service with the approval of the German parliament if necessary, for defense policy”.
Der Spiegel noted that the incentive measures haven’t attracted a sufficient number of voluntary applicants.
The draft stipulates that the call-up would be possible “if the defense policy situation requires an urgent increase in the size of the armed forces that cannot be achieved on a voluntary basis”.
The draft law is scheduled to be presented to the Council of Ministers at the end of next August.
