Chad announces termination of defense cooperation agreement with France
Chad announced on Thursday the termination of the defense cooperation agreement with France, which was revised on September 5, 2019 with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defense between the two countries.
A statement signed by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, Chadians Abroad and International Cooperation, and government spokesman, Abderrahmane Kalam Allah, stated that the government of the Republic of Chad informs national and international public opinion of its decision to cancel the defense cooperation agreement signed with the French Republic.
The statement added that this decision, taken after a deep analysis, represents a historic turning point.
Indeed, 66 years after the proclamation of the Republic of Chad, it’s time for Chad to assert its full sovereignty and redefine its strategic partnerships in accordance with national priorities.
The statement indicated that Chad undertakes, in accordance with the provisions of the agreement, to respect the conditions stipulated for implementing this decision, including the notification period, and to cooperate with the French authorities in order to ensure a smooth transition.
Chad’s decision to terminate the defense cooperation agreement with France came hours after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot arrived in the capital, N’Djamena, from a refugee camp near the border between Chad and Sudan.
