Austin Tice’s fate… Even the Israelis have gathered information about him in Syria
The case of American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared in Syria in 2012, is back in the spotlight, amid uncertainty over his fate more than 13 years after his arrest near Damascus.
Despite the confirmation of sources close to the former Syrian regime that Tice was executed, his mother, Debra, didn’t stop the search, as she visited Damascus last year after the fall of Assad’s regime, and received a promise from the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al Shara, to follow up on the case.
Debra recently appeared in an interview with Israel’s N12 channel, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allow her to see everything that Israeli intelligence services have collected about her son.
“It’s no secret that Israel has one of the best intelligence services in the world, and if Washington has shared its secret information with us, we hope Israel will do the same,” she said.
Israeli officials have previously confirmed that their intelligence has collected information about Tice over the years and shared it with the US side.
Former Israeli officer Avi Kalo explained that there are indications that the Syrian security services affiliated with the Assad regime are involved in the case, and that this information has already been passed on to Washington.
The latest information about Tice to US intelligence dates back to October 2024, six weeks before the fall of the Assad regime, but his family hopes that Israel has more information or sources from inside the former regime who are now in exile that may reveal his fate.
Austin Tice, a former US Marine Corps captain and freelance journalist for The Washington Post, disappeared in August 2012 near Damascus at the age of 31, leaving his case one of the most mysterious in the Syrian war.
