Argentine President sacks his Foreign Minister Over Vote Against US Sanctions on Cuba
Argentinian President Javier Milei has fired his foreign minister, Diana Mondino, after she voted Wednesday at the United Nations against the US embargo on Cuba, the presidency’s spokesman said.
Milei appointed a new minister according to a post by Argentine presidential spokesman Manuel Adroni on X, shortly after the United Nations adopted a resolution against the US embargo on Cuba by an overwhelming majority of 187 votes to two (the United States and Israel) and Moldova abstaining.
“The new Foreign Minister of the Argentine Republic is Gerardo Ferthén, former ambassador to the United States,” the post says.
After the dismissal was announced, Milei, who was elected president in December, retweeted a comment by a member of parliament who said, she was “proud of a government that doesn’t support or collude with tyrants… Long live free Cuba”.
Gerardo Firthín is an Argentine businessman and vice president of the International Olympic Committee.
He headed the Argentine Olympic Committee between 2009 and 2021, before being appointed by Milei as Argentina’s ambassador to the United States.
It’s worth noting though, that Argentina has always voted against the ban and US sanctions imposed on Cuba in the past.
