Ankara warning of damaging its relationship with Berlin due to Armenians
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Germany proposed a law of killing Armenians in 1915 and consider it as a “genocide”, would damage relations between Berlin and Ankara.
Erdogan said in remarks to reporters before leaving on an official visit to Africa that there are those who are trying to «deceive» Germany on the events of 1915, without accusing anyone in his name.
Erdogan said, «If Germany got deceived with this, it’ll harmed bilateral relations in all diplomatic, economic, commercial, political and military, since we’re both are NATO members».
A presidential sources said that, the Turkish president’s remarks came after he held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to express concern about the draft of this law.
A spokesman of the German government confirmed the telephone conversation and said that the two leaders discussed implementation of migration between the EU and Turkey agreement.
Erdogan’s remarks came ahead of an expected Germans legislators vote for this law this June on the support of a proposal by describing the killing of 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of Ottoman forces, hundred years ago as «genocide».
Turkey says that there were not a systematic campaign to eliminate Christians, Armenians and there is no evidence that the issuance of any orders from the Ottoman authorities.
