Ahmed al Sharaa and Erdogan discussed a defense agreement that includes establishing Turkish bases in Syria and training the Syrian army
During his visit to Türkiye, the Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa discussed with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a defense agreement that includes the establishment of Turkish military bases in Syria.
According to sources, al Sharaa discussed with Erdogan the issue of Turkey training the Syrian army, in addition to identifying new areas for the deployment of Turkish forces, including the establishment of two military bases in the Syrian desert region in central Syria.
The sources confirmed that Türkiye seeks to establish these bases as a deterrent message to Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria.
They also indicated that these bases will allow Ankara to defend Syrian airspace in the event of any attacks.
Earlier, Turkish media reported that Ankara may build two military bases in Syria and may deploy F-16 fighter jets there in the near future.
The new Syrian administration has also reportedly asked Türkiye to provide it with drones, radars and electronic warfare systems to strengthen control over the border with Israel.
From his part, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that his country seeks to raise its relations with Damascus to a strategic level, stressing the importance of achieving security and economic stability in Syria.
The Turkish President pointed out that the next stage will witness an intensification of visits and meetings with the Syrian side, stressing Ankara’s commitment to raising the level of cooperation to a strategic partnership.
Erdogan criticized the Western sanctions imposed on Syria, considering that they hinder economic recovery efforts, and stressed Türkiye’s readiness to provide the necessary support in this new phase.
