A senior Mossad officer reveals information about the assignation of the former Hezbollah Secretary-General
Israeli President Isaac Herzog awarded the Mossad the “Israeli Security Award” on Tuesday for its role in the assassination of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut nearly a year ago.
The Israeli Mossad officer, responsible for recruiting and operating agents for the Mossad, spoke on behalf of the winners at the ceremony held at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, revealing new details about the assassination operation.
He said, “This operation was born when an ambitious technological idea, which can only be described as imaginative, met with the best technology experts”.
He added, “Thanks to the cooperation between the IDF, the Mossad, the Defense Research and Development Directorate (Mafaat), the defense industries, and academia, this fantasy became a reality with significant impact… However, pioneering technology is not enough on its own… The operation required precise intelligence and daring operational capabilities, sometimes risking lives in the heart of a hostile state, to turn the impossible into the possible”.
Mossad agents worked with courage and determination to assassinate Nasrallah under fire in the heart of Beirut, providing accurate intelligence for the operation.
September 27 will remain a defining day in history, as it marked the conclusion of ten days of intense fighting that began with the pager operation.
Following the ceremony, Mossad chief David Barnea congratulated the organization’s employees, emphasizing that receiving the award this year was particularly symbolic because it reflects the strength of the security establishment in resolving the conflict with Hezbollah—starting with last year’s award win for the pager operation and ending with this year’s win for the Nasrallah assassination.
A Mossad statement after the ceremony said, “Barnea pointed out that these successes are based on three core values that the Mossad operates by: courage, technological innovation, and resourcefulness”.
Barnea added, “The combination of the organization’s operational capabilities, advanced technology, and high-quality intelligence enables us to turn this vision into reality, and the deep partnership with the Israeli military is the key to every success”.
Nasrallah was assassinated in the southern suburbs of Beirut on September 27 of last year, in an operation in which more than 80 bombs, each weighing one ton, were dropped on his headquarters.
The Israeli military’s statement following the assassination stated that Air Force fighter jets, based on precise intelligence guidance from the Military Intelligence Directorate (Aman) and the security establishment, attacked Hezbollah’s central headquarters, located under a residential building in the Beirut southern suburb.
