China announced Friday that it holding an American citizen, an analyst at a research center specializing in Burma affairs, on suspicion of espionage activities.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference that Min Zhen underwent mandatory criminal procedures in accordance with the law, on suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that endangered China’s national security, thus confirming press reports about the arrest in China.

The Chinese spokesman didn’t specify the nature of the mandatory criminal procedures, but it generally means that he is deprived of freedom of movement.

The spokesperson added that the Chinese side informed the US Consulate General in Guangzhou of this issue, stressing that “Min Zhen’s legal rights are fully guaranteed”.

Min Zhen is a founding member of the Institute for Strategy and Policy in ​​Burma.
