The US House of Representatives passed a bill calling for an end to military operations against Iran and the withdrawal of US forces involved, a development that directly challenges the policies of President Donald Trump, who ordered the start of the war on February 28.

The bill, initiated by Democratic members of the House, aims to halt military operations until the administration obtains formal authorization from Congress, amid growing concerns within US political circles about the repercussions of continuing the war.

The bill passed with 215 votes in favor and 208 against, after four Republican representatives joined the Democrats in voting for it, reflecting divisions within the Republican Party itself regarding the Iranian issue.

A White House official described the resolution as unconstitutional, asserting that the administration sees no legal effect for it even if it were to pass the Senate, which he considered unlikely at present.

The official added that President Trump will continue to take whatever measures he deems necessary to protect US national security, based on his constitutional powers as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Although the resolution is largely symbolic due to the president’s veto power, it represents a clear indication of growing opposition within Congress to the continuation of the war.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries had previously called for an end to what he termed a costly and unintentional war of choice, asserting that it had cost American taxpayers over $100 billion and that its continuation had weakened the United States’ position relative to Iran.

For its part, Fox News described the resolution’s passage as one of the most significant political setbacks Trump has suffered in Congress, particularly as it marks the first time the House of Representatives has succeeded in passing such a measure after three previous failed attempts to end the war.
