Israeli army spokesman, Brigadier general Effie Defrin said on Thursday that the army is suffering from a shortage of about 15,000 soldiers, including 7,000 to 8,000 fighters, in light of the expansion of the scope of missions on various fronts, according to Haaretz newspaper.

Haaretz quoted Defrin as saying that the army is suffering from a shortage of about 15,000 soldiers, including 7,000 to 8,000 fighters.

He added that the army needs to strengthen its forces in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Syria.

Defrin pointed out that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir is obliged to present his position on the readiness of the army, and that what is currently required is the approval of the conscription law for the ultra- religious Orthodox.

Earlier on Thursday, Zamir warned that the army is heading towards collapse from within, in light of the escalating operational burdens and the failure to pass laws related to conscription and military service.

The ultra-Rest of the Faith Law aims to impose gradual conscription quotas on ultra-Orthodox religious people to fill the shortage of manpower in the army as a result of the war, while imposing financial and criminal penalties on those who abstain, which the religious parties strongly reject.
