Israeli President Isaac Herzog began an official visit to Addis Ababa on Wednesday, during which he will meet with his Ethiopian counterpart Tay Atsuki Selassie.

Herzog’s office said in a statement that the latter arrived in the capital Addis Ababa on Wednesday morning at the start of the state’s visit to Ethiopia, without specifying the duration.

Herzog was received at the airport by Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gideon Timothy and Tel Aviv’s ambassador to Addis Ababa, Avraham Negwis, the office said.

Herzog is expected to meet today with his Ethiopian counterpart Tai Atzke Selassie and with leaders of the local Jewish community.

Herzog’s visit to Addis Ababa comes amid disagreements over border, water security and maritime issues between Addis Ababa and Egypt, Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.

“Israel considers Ethiopia a long-term strategic partner and is working to strengthen relations with it further,” according to previous statements by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.

In February 2025, Israel and Ethiopia signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in the fields of energy, water, and innovation, including the integration of Israeli companies in water infrastructure development projects in the African country.
