Niger’s president is visiting Algeria after months of diplomatic tensions
The Algerian presidency announced that the President of the Republic of Niger, Lieutenant General Abdourahamane Tchiani, is visitingAlgeria with an important delegation, as the visit will continue until Monday.
The visit comes after months of political tensions, as the Algerian presidency said, the visit aims to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, cooperation and good neighborliness between the two countries, within the framework of a new dynamic to better exploit their economic and human potential for the benefit of both peoples.
The visit includes an official talk with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and senior Algerian officials.
According to the statement, discussions addresses political issues related to the African continent in general and the Sahel region in particular, especially developments in regional security, border stability, and mechanisms for combating terrorism and cross-border organized crime.
Economic cooperation is expected to be a major item on the agenda, with both sides will explore expanding trade exchanges, developing transportation corridors linking the Mediterranean to the Sahel, and strengthening energy and infrastructure partnerships, including electricity interconnection and fuel supply projects to support Niger’s domestic market.
Migration and humanitarian coordination are also likely to be discussed, as both countries face growing pressures linked to population movement across the Sahara.
Algeria has recently intensified cooperation initiatives with Sahel states aimed at stabilizing the region through development programs rather than purely military approaches.
Observers note that the visit comes at a sensitive moment for the Sahel following political transitions and shifting regional alliances, and may indicate efforts to build a new regional coordination framework led by neighboring states rather than external players.
