The French president declares his readiness for dialogue with his Algerian counterpart on relations between the two countries
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was ready for dialogue with his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune on the tense relations between the two countries, on the condition that the dialogue be serious and calm and lead to achieving results.
Asked about the possibility of meeting with Tebboune on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa in a few days, Macron added that if the mentioned conditions are met, he will be of course ready for any dialogue, noting that French diplomatic teams are working on this.
Franco-Algerian relations have been strained for more than a year, with the reciprocal expulsion of diplomats, the recall of the French ambassador in Algeria, and the withdrawal of the Algerian ambassador from Paris.
The crisis erupted dramatically in July 2024, after France announced its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal in Western Sahara.
