Epstein scandal: Trump retracts his stance and declares his support for the vote on the disclosure of the case files
US President Donald Trump said Sunday he supports efforts by US lawmakers to release more files related to the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, despite his previous opposition to the measure.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that “House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide”.
Trump accused Democrats of fabricating the “Epstein hoax” after emails surfaced in which Epstein suggested Trump was “aware about the girls”.
Trump has been accused of trying to obstruct the vote to hide what could reveal his involvement in the case, which has divided his normally strong supporters.
The case has prompted Trump to distance himself from some of his closest allies within the “Make America Great Again” movement, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, whom he withdrew his endorsement.
“Some members of the Republican Party are being exploited, and we cannot allow that to happen,” Trump wrote in his post, referring to some Republican lawmakers who have backed away from their support for his positions.
Trump has asked Attorney General Pam Bundy and the FBI to investigate links between Epstein and former Democratic President Bill Clinton, as well as former Harvard University President Larry Summers, who served as Clinton’s Treasury secretary.
Before his suspicious death in his cell back in 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was asked to register as a sex offender in Florida after pleading guilty in 2008 to two counts of inciting prostitution, including of a minor.
