Syrian Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Murhaf Abu Qusra held a meeting in Damascus on Sunday with a high-ranking Russian military delegation led by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkirov, in the latest sign of deepening defense ties between the two allied countries.

According to the Syrian official News Agency (SANA), the discussions focused on expanding existing military cooperation frameworks and refining joint coordination mechanisms between the Syrian Arab Army and the Russian Armed Forces.

SANA noted that the two sides exchanged views on ongoing strategic projects, operational coordination, and ways to enhance joint capabilities in line with the evolving security environment in the region.

Syrian officials emphasized that strengthening bilateral cooperation serves the shared strategic interests of both Damascus and Moscow and aligns with the long-term vision of the two governments regarding regional stability and counterterrorism efforts.

The meeting comes shortly after Maj. Gen. Abu Qusra’s official visit to Moscow at the end of October, during which he met Russian Defense Minister Andrei Pilavsov.

At the time, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the talks in Moscow included reviews of ongoing joint initiatives and discussions on how to accelerate the implementation of promising cooperation projects between the two defense ministries.

Sunday’s talks in Damascus are viewed as a continuation of those discussions, reinforcing a pattern of frequent high-level military engagements between Russia and Syria, both of whom maintain close coordination in military operations, training programs, and logistical support.
