Syria announced on Wednesday its official recognition of the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state, at a tripartite meeting that included Syria, Saudi Arabia and Kosovo in Riyadh.

The meeting was attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa, and Kosovo President Voja Osmani.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “The Syrian Arab Republic announces its official recognition of the Republic of Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state, based on its belief in the right of peoples to self-determination and its keenness to promote the principles of peace and stability in the Balkans and the world”.

The statement also expressed the Syrian Arab Republic’s deep appreciation for the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its constructive role in bringing viewpoints closer and supporting dialogue and understanding, which contributed to creating the appropriate conditions for taking this decision.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, a move not recognized by Belgrade.

Serbia lost control of Kosovo after being expelled by NATO forces in 1999 following a war waged by Serbian security forces against ethnic Albanian fighters.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the decision comes within the framework of the Syrian policy aimed at expanding bridges of cooperation and openness with various countries of the world, and expressed its aspiration to establish diplomatic relations with Kosovo as soon as possible and to develop bilateral cooperation in the political, economic and cultural fields.
