US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the national emergency related to the situation in Syria for an additional year, based on the National Emergencies Act and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

In an official statement published in the Federal Register, Trump confirmed that the emergency declared in Executive Order 13894 of October 14, 2019, which reflects the unusual and extraordinary threat posed by the situation in Syria to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, will remain in effect after October 14, 2025.

The statement indicated that the United States has taken additional steps to strengthen these measures, including Executive Order 14142 issued on January 15, 2025, in response to changes on the ground in Syria, and Executive Order 14312 issued on June 30, 2025, which expanded the scope of the emergency to include ensuring accountability for war crimes and human rights violations, in addition to targeting drug trafficking networks linked to the Bashar al Assad regime and its leaders.

The statement emphasized that the situation in Syria continues to pose an obstacle to the international campaign to defeat ISIS, exposes civilians to ongoing dangers, and threatens peace and stability in the region.

President Trump emphasized the importance of taking additional measures to ensure accountability for perpetrators of war crimes, human rights abuses, and drug traffickers associated with the former Syrian regime, asserting that they continue to pose a continuing threat to US national security and foreign policy.

Under this extension, all sanctions and measures imposed by previous executive orders remain in effect.

Trump also emphasized that publishing this order in the Federal Register and transmitting it to Congress is a necessary legal step to ensure transparency and continued accountability.

Its noteworthy that former US President Joe Biden had announced on October 11, 2024, the extension of the national emergency related to Syria for an additional year, stating that the situation in Syria endangers civilians and continues to pose an extraordinary threat to US national security.
