France is set to officially recognize the State of Palestine next Monday, while Portugal plans to do the same on Sunday.

This marks a significant diplomatic shift in Europe toward formal recognition of Palestinian statehood.

French President Emmanuel Macron informed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during a phone call of his intention to recognize the State of Palestine on Monday.

Macron stated on X that he discussed with Abbas the urgent humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip.

He confirmed that this recognition will be announced during his stay in New York as part of a broader peace plan.

Macron also emphasized France’s ongoing support for reforms within the Palestinian Authority to ensure the stability of a future Palestinian state.

Abbas reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to implementing these reforms, as France pledged to continue backing Palestinian institutions and to help implement commitments aimed at achieving long-term security and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Portugal will officially recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly session, during which about ten other countries are expected to follow suit.

In addition, the United Kingdom has signaled its intent to recognize the State of Palestine in the near future.

British officials have hinted that such recognition could come as part of a coordinated European initiative or alongside renewed peace efforts, as the UK’s position reflects growing international support for Palestinian statehood.
