Trump announces changing the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War!
Th White House announced that US President Donald Trump has decided to reuse the term “Department of War” as a secondary name for the Department of Defense, in an attempt to project a more robust and assertive image of US military policy.
The decision, which will be implemented via executive order, allows the use of the new designation in official correspondence and protocol, although the department’s legal name will remain Department of Defense.
The official White House document emphasized that “Department of War” conveys a stronger message of readiness and resolve, and requires the secretary to propose legislative and executive measures to permanently establish the name.
Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire for this change, believes the term “defense” doesn’t reflect the offensive nature he desires for the US military.
He previously said, “That was the name when we won the two world wars… I don’t want to just be a defender; I want to attack”.
The new name recalls the early days of US history, when the Department of War was responsible for the ground forces before it was abolished after World War II and merged with the Navy and Air Force under the umbrella of the National Military Establishment, which later became the Department of Defense in 1949.
The move reflects a new trend within the Trump administration toward more assertive rhetoric and raises questions about its impact on US foreign and military policy going forward.
