General Gerharz was promoted to the rank of four-star general before taking up his new position, in which he will directly command 800 men and women from 30 of NATO’s 32 member countries. In emergencies, around one million troops will be commanded from the alliance’s headquarters in Brunssum
It’s worth noting that Brunssum, Netherlands, is home to one of NATO’s three operational headquarters, as the other two are in Naples and Norfolk (USA), with both commanded by the United States.
