Clashes involving artillery and machine guns erupted Wednesday night between India and Pakistan along the demarcation line separating the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region, New Delhi announced.

The two countries exchanged heavy shelling on Wednesday, killing 31 people on the Pakistani side and 12 on the Indian side, in the most serious military confrontation between the two nuclear powers in two decades.

Since the April 22 attack that killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, tensions have escalated between the two countries, which have been at odds since the country’s partition in 1947.

This tension escalated into a military confrontation on Tuesday night, while international parties rushed to offer mediation between the two sides, or at least call for restraint.

On Thursday morning, the Indian army said in a statement that on the night of May 7-8, 2025, the Pakistani army carried out unprovoked shelling with small arms and artillery along the Line of Control (which effectively serves as the border between the two countries) in the Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor sectors.
