US President Donald Trump continues to use tariffs as a means of pressure against both allies and adversaries, as part of his economic vision that aims to adjust the trade balance in favor of the United States.

His recent decisions to impose steep tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China have sparked sharp reactions, suggesting that economic tensions could escalate.

Trump seeks through these fees to implement his election campaign promises, as he imposed a 10% tax on all Chinese imports and a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico.

The main goal of this step is to reduce the trade deficit with these countries and force them to make concessions that serve the economic interests of the United States.

The affected countries were quick to respond, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing a similar 25% tariff on US imports.

China, for its part, confirmed that it would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization, while the European Union threatened to respond firmly if it was targeted with unfair tariffs.

Regarding the EU, the European Union’s entry into this confrontation could lead to the outbreak of a comprehensive trade war, which would threaten the stability of trade and the global economy.

Despite international criticism, Trump isn’t seemed to be content with merely imposing tariffs, but is seeking to achieve political gains on the global level.

Trump aims to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), or withdraw from it entirely, to improve trade terms with Canada and Mexico.

It seems that the impact of these policies won’t be limited to the United States and its trading partners, but will extend to the global economy more broadly.

Canada on the other hand, is already suffering from economic crises, with high inflation and tax rates, which makes it more vulnerable to US tariffs.

As the escalation continues, diplomatic solutions remain possible.

China has expressed its willingness to negotiate with Washington, while Canada and Mexico hope to return to the negotiating table instead of mutual escalation.

Between escalating trade confrontations and the prospect of a return to dialogue, Trump’s policies remain central to shaping the future of global trade relations.
