X closes the Syrian presidency account
X announced the suspension of an account affiliated with the Syrian presidency only two hours after publishing a photo of Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa on a plane heading to the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
Upon entering the account’s home page, a message appeared stating that the account had been suspended for violating the platform’s rules.
This was confirmed by a journalist close to the Syrian authorities.
It’s known though, that the official accounts of government officials in various countries of the world are verified with special badges such as the gray or lead badge, which indicate the account’s affiliation with governments, official institutions, or government officials.
While the reason behind the account suspension isn’t yet clear, there is speculation that the position of President Ahmed al Sharaa remains sensitive given his history.
Ahmed al Sharaa, who was recently appointed president, was previously the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al Sham, an armed faction that he dissolved as part of the transitional government’s efforts to integrate armed factions under the command of the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
In a related context, US media reported that former President Joe Biden’s administration intends to maintain the classification of the new Islamic rulers in Syria as a terrorist organization until the end of Biden’s term.
Despite the transfer of power to current President Donald Trump, the US administration hasn’t shown any noticeable change in its position towards the new authority in Damascus.
