The European Union announced the suspension of sanctions on Syria for one year, including in the areas of aviation, shipping, energy and banking infrastructure.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said that foreign ministers agreed to develop a roadmap to ease sanctions in order to support the Syrian economy.

However, she warned that sanctions could be re-imposed if Syria takes the wrong steps.

From her part, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock explained that the aim of this decision is to put the country back on the right economic track, stressing the importance of improving the electricity situation to revitalize the economy.

Baerbock also stressed the need to involve all segments of the population in the transitional process aimed at drafting a new constitution and organizing elections.

She called on six European countries, including France and Germany, to temporarily suspend sanctions on Syria to facilitate the country’s reconstruction.
