Israeli army announces recovery of remains of soldier who was held in Gaza Strip since 2014
The Israeli army announced on Sunday the recovery of the remains of Israeli soldier Oron Shaul, who had been held in the Gaza Strip since 2014, during a special operation.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the news.
It said in a statement that this was carried out in a special operation carried out by the Israeli army and the internal intelligence agency (Shin Bet).
“In a special covert operation… the remains of the missing soldier Oron Shaul, who fell in battle in the Shujaiya neighborhood northern Gaza Strip on July 20, 2014, were recovered,” the army said in a statement.
Shaul was killed in 2014 during the war between Israel and Hamas.
His family was informed that his remains had been recovered after it had been officially verified, according to the military.
“It was an important intelligence and operational operation,” Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a televised briefing.
“It has been ongoing over the past decade, since his fall and capture, and especially during the current war and over the past few days”.
Shaul was one of two soldiers killed in the 2014 war whose bodies are being held in the Gaza Strip.
The other body, that of Hadar Goldin, is still in the Gaza Strip.
