The Yemeni Ansar Allah group announced on Sunday that it had shot down a US F-18 fighter jet while targeting an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, after Washington claimed that it had been shot down by friendly fire.

The military spokesman for the group’s forces, Yahya Saree, said in a statement that the group’s forces succeeded in “thwarting an American-British attack on Yemen”.

He added, “The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and a number of its destroyers were targeted, coinciding with the start of the aggressive attack yesterday evening (Saturday) on Yemen”.

Saree explained that the operation “was carried out with 8 cruise missiles and 17 drones, and led to the downing of an F-18 aircraft, while the destroyers were trying to confront the Yemeni drones and missiles”.

The operation also led to “most of the enemy warplanes leaving Yemeni airspace for international waters in the Red Sea to defend the aircraft carrier while it was being targeted,” according to the statement.

Earlier on Sunday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a US Navy F/A-18 fighter jet was shot down over the Red Sea by friendly fire.
