German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Wednesday that her country plans to increase its presence in Syria, with the appointment of a special representative to achieve this goal.

“In view of the ongoing developments in Syria, we will work to strengthen our presence on the ground… I have therefore appointed a special coordinator for Syria within the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, with State Secretary Tobias Lindner responsible for this task,” Baerbock wrote on X.

“Germany has always maintained channels of dialogue with many representatives of Syrian society, and now it’s necessary to reactivate these channels to facilitate political dialogue and provide humanitarian aid,” Baerbock added.

She also pointed out the need for the governments of Israel and Türkiye to avoid jeopardizing the territorial integrity of Syria, while supporting the formation of a unified government in the country.
