Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Afai and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed by phone on Friday the long-standing and traditional friendly cooperation between the two countries, and pledged to unite their efforts with those of the international community to confront global challenges.

Diomaye Afai explained in a tweet on X that the phone call between him and Putin was very rich and cordial, during which they agreed to work together to strengthen the bilateral partnership and peace and stability in the Sahel region, including preserving the ECOWAS space.

For his part, the Kremlin said in a statement that at the initiative of the Senegalese side, President Vladimir Putin had a telephone call with the President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Afai.

The Kremlin statement explained that the situation in the Sahara, Sahel and West Africa region was discussed, against the backdrop of the ongoing instability there caused by the actions of terrorist groups.

These discussions come months after Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall visited Russia and held talks with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on issues related to areas including energy, technology, training and agriculture.
